PROGRES.ID– Every year, Muslims in Indonesia celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which falls on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal in the Islamic Hijri calendar. This year, the grand celebration of Maulid Nabi is observed with joy on Thursday, September 28, 2023.
Indonesia, as a predominantly Muslim country, boasts a variety of traditions when it comes to commemorating Maulid Nabi. Each region has its own uniqueness and distinct way of honoring this historic occasion.
One of the most distinctive and unique traditions is found in Bengkulu, known as the “Jambar Uang” tradition. This tradition is a local cultural heritage that is proudly preserved by the local community, especially in the Bajak Subdistrict of Teluk Segara.
Jambar Uang is a vibrant and colorful celebration. During the Maulid Nabi festivities, cash money is hung on plants or decorated stems, resembling beautiful flower pots. Subsequently, the Jambar Uang procession is carried out with great enthusiasm, traveling from house to house before reaching the central mosque, which serves as the focal point of the celebration.
What makes this tradition truly special is that the money displayed during the procession is not merely decorative. Instead, it serves a noble purpose. After the Jambar Uang procession concludes, the collected money is not taken home by its owners. Instead, it is donated to the mosque as an act of charity and goodwill.
The Jambar Uang tradition in Bengkulu goes beyond celebrating the Prophet’s birth; it also imparts values of togetherness, solidarity, and social responsibility. Through these benevolent acts, the people of Bengkulu not only commemorate their religious history but also share blessings with their fellow community members, strengthening social bonds.
