Ronaldo, who is now 39 years old, faces uncertainty about his chances of playing in the 2026 World Cup, as he will be 41 years old when that tournament takes place.

Martinez stated that the final decision regarding Ronaldo’s future with the national team is entirely up to the player. The Spanish coach said,

“It’s too early to discuss this after the match, and no individual decision has been made [by Ronaldo].”

Euro 2024 turned out to be the worst major tournament for Ronaldo with the Portugal national team. He failed to score a single goal, a record that has never happened before in his participation in five World Cups and five Euros.

Ronaldo successfully scored a penalty kick during the Portugal vs. France match.

However, in the penalty shootout, France defeated Portugal, and Ronaldo and his team failed to reach the Euro 2024 semifinals.

Ronaldo also set a negative record as the player with the most shot attempts without scoring, with 23 attempts.

In addition to Ronaldo, Pepe’s future is also in question. The 41-year-old defender cried after Portugal’s elimination. Martinez praised Pepe as an example for Portuguese football and stated that his contributions will be remembered by future generations.
