Furthermore, creative economic products such as Jakarta’s traditional market snacks are highly recommended for participants of the ASEAN Summit.
Taking advantage of this important moment, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) has released recommendations for several traditional market snacks that delegates can enjoy during the ASEAN Summit in Jakarta.
One of the tempting Betawi culinary delights is “Kerak Telor.” This food is famous for its savory taste with a soft interior and crispy exterior. Usually, kerak telor can be found in traditional markets in Jakarta. However, over time, this snack can also be found in malls or modern shopping centers. Kerak telor is made from a mixture of duck eggs, white glutinous rice, fried shallots, and dried shrimp. To give it its distinctive flavor, kerak telor is also seasoned with various spices such as red chili, galangal, ginger, coconut flakes, pepper, salt, and sugar. The unique cooking process involves partially cooking the kerak telor mixture and then finishing it by placing it on a charcoal grill.
“Selendang Mayang” is another popular Betawi snack. It is made from rice flour mixed with colorful food coloring, and it is served with syrup, coconut milk, and ice. It has a sweet, savory, cold, and refreshing taste, making it a perfect dessert choice.
“Bir Pletok” is a famous traditional Betawi beverage that does not contain alcohol despite its name containing “bir.” This drink is made from a mixture of selected spices such as secang wood, cinnamon, ginger, lemongrass, red ginger, turmeric, black pepper, pandan leaves, nutmeg, orange leaves, cloves, and cardamom. Sugar and salt are added to give it a delicious taste.
