PROGRES.ID – Padjadjaran University (Unpad) microbiologist, Dr. Mia Miranti said that the Merah Putih (Red and White) vaccine that was developed in Indonesia turned out to have different sources (seeds) for the vaccine.

According to him, this depends on the institution that develops it.

“The fastest example that has been researched and ready for clinical trials starting in August 2021 is the Merah Putih vaccine candidate developed by Universitas Airlangga (Unair) in collaboration with PT. Biotic Pharmaceutical Indonesia,” Mia told Health via text message, Thursday (16/9/2021).

The Red and White vaccine developed by Unair is made from an inactivated coronavirus isolated in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the Merah Putih vaccine developed by the Eijkman Institute uses a recombinant protein spike protein subunit vaccine seed. It will only be pre-clinical in November 2021.

Developed by Unpad

“On the other hand, the Merah Putih vaccine developed by Unpad uses a recombinant protein and peptide vaccine seed, IgY anti-RBD spike Sars-CoV-2,” continued Mia.

“Unpad has just applied for a test permit to animals for testing and toxicity testing.”

There is also a vaccine that is not Merah Putih and also developed in Indonesia, namely the Nusantara vaccine. This vaccine is very different from the Red and White vaccine because it uses dendritic cells as the vaccine seed. Dendritic cells are one of the immune cells of the human body.

Methods of Making Vaccines at Unpad

Mia also explained the method of making the Red and White vaccine at Unpad.

According to him, the method used was to isolate Yolk Immunoglobulin (IgY) from chicken egg yolks that had been injected with Sars-CoV-2 protein antigen.

Furthermore, the antibody from the egg yolk is purified and used as a passive vaccine whose working principle is the same as convalescent plasma.

Regarding the effectiveness of the Merah Putih vaccine, Mia said that there is a possibility that the vaccine will be affected by the COVID-19 mutation that could occur in the future.

“As long as the COVID-19 virus mutates, it will indeed affect the performance of the Merah Putih vaccine. This means that the Red and White vaccine that is made now will not be effective to prevent the virus from mutating in the future,” he concluded.
